US Finalizes Transfer of ISIS Detainees from Syria to Iraq
According to a statement released by CENTCOM, the operation commenced on Jan. 21 and concluded on Feb. 12 with a nighttime flight transporting the remaining detainees from Syria into Iraq.
The command stated that US personnel oversaw and carried out the transfers to ensure the individuals “remain secure in detention facilities.”
Admiral Brad Cooper, head of CENTCOM, commended those involved in the operation, saying, “Job well done to the entire Joint Force team who executed this exceptionally challenging mission on the ground and in the air with great focus, professionalism, and collaboration with our regional partners.”
He also acknowledged Baghdad’s role in facilitating the process, adding, “We appreciate Iraq’s leadership and recognition that transferring the detainees is essential to regional security.”
Mission planning and execution were conducted by US and coalition forces operating under Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), which coordinated the logistical and security aspects of the relocation effort.
US Army Maj. Gen. Kevin Lambert, commander of CJTF-OIR, praised the multinational collaboration, stating, “I am extremely proud of the coalition’s exceptional work.”
Emphasizing the broader objective, Lambert said, “The successful execution of this orderly and secure transfer operation will help prevent an ISIS resurgence in Syria.”
CENTCOM formed CJTF-OIR in 2014 to support partner forces in combating ISIS. Although the group lost its territorial control in 2019, efforts have continued to prevent its reemergence.
