Netanyahu emphasizes Israel’s aim for peaceful border with Syria

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that Israel seeks to maintain a “peaceful border” with Syria.

“We want to make sure that the border area right next to our border is safe. We don't have terrorists, we don't have attacks,” Netanyahu said during a news conference alongside US President Donald Trump in Florida.

He added, “And we also want to secure our Druze friends. And by the way, I think not only the Druze, but other minorities, especially the Christians, should be protected as well in Syria and throughout the Middle East.”

Following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, Israel expanded its control in the Syrian Golan Heights by occupying the demilitarized buffer zone, a move considered a violation of the 1974 agreement with Syria.

In recent weeks, Israeli forces have reportedly conducted near-daily incursions in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra governorate, carrying out arrests, establishing checkpoints, and clearing forested areas—measures that have fueled rising local resentment toward Israel.

US-led security talks between Damascus and Tel Aviv have so far produced no breakthrough.

Israel is seeking a new security framework, while Syria demands that Israeli forces withdraw to pre-December 8, 2024 positions and restore the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which Israeli officials claim is void until “order is restored in Syria.”

After nearly 25 years in power, Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia on December 8, 2024, ending the Baath Party regime. Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of the anti-regime forces, was declared interim president in late January.
