US Confirms Death of Israeli Embassy Workers in DC

(MENAFN) Two employees from the Israeli Embassy were tragically gunned down late on Wednesday night near the Capital Jewish Museum in the heart of Washington, DC.

Authorities in the United States have confirmed the fatalities, suggesting the violence might have been motivated by anti-Semitic extremism.

The victims, a man and a woman whose names have not been officially released, were struck by gunfire at a short distance as they left an event at the museum.

This cultural institution is located at the intersection of 3rd and F Streets NW, a location that lies close to several federal agencies, including the Washington branch of the FBI.

“Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington DC,” declared US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who labeled the incident as “depraved” and promised accountability for those responsible.

Israel's envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, strongly denounced the killings, describing the shooting as a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.”

He further cautioned that “harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line,” signaling the seriousness with which Israel views the attack.

According to Tal Naim Cohen, a spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy, both individuals had been participating in the museum event when they were deliberately targeted.

“We have full faith in law enforcement authorities on both the local and federal levels to apprehend the shooter and protect Israel’s representatives and Jewish communities throughout the United States,” she said in a formal release.

Law enforcement reacted swiftly, implementing an extensive emergency operation that included sealing off several adjacent streets and placing Georgetown University’s Capitol campus under lockdown.

A news agency noted that authorities are searching for a male suspect described as having a goatee and wearing blue jeans with a blue jacket. US media also reported that the Israeli ambassador was not at the location during the shooting.
